Several hours after reports of the arrest of outgoing SONU boss Babu Owino reached students at the University of Nairobi, the university was engulfed with tension as students threatened to go on strike demanding for his release.
Through his Facebook page, Babu Owino, who is serving his first term as Embakasi East Member of Parliament on an ODM ticket posted that he had been arrested by the Flying Squad.
“Been (sic) arrested held at parklands station, charges are two: Harboring an intention to overthrow the government and assault. It shall be well.” Babu Owino posted on Friday evening before students at the premier university in Kenya took up the message and called for his immediate release.
Several hours later, Babu Owino, through his Facebook page tried to shed light on the possible reason for his arrest.
“My arrest is as a result of a deep conspiracy involving Jubilee govt, Mr. Francis Mureithi and Director of Criminal Investigations Nairobi County Mr Kamwende on realization that we are going to win the petition against my victory on 8/8/2017,” said Babu.
“Mr Kamwende who is in charge of CID operations in Nairobi is acting under orders from Statehouse having received a bribe of Ksh 200 000 from my former opponent Mr Francis Mureithi at Sankara Hotel at around 3:30PM today!” he added in what seemed like the deepening of his woes that started upon his win of the Embakasi East seat.
Posting on UoN’s most popular Facebook Group “NEW COMRADES FORUM” Babu’s confidant Fredrick Ndege called for his immediate release.
Other people who have commented on the news include UNSA Chairman aspirant Apiyo JF Apiyo and Secretary General aspirant Jamal Birkan. The two called for the immediate release of Babu Owino threatening to take students to the streets to demand for his release.
Tension at the University’s Parklands campus was palpable on Saturday morning as students threatened to go on the streets.
